ALTER – Active Local Territories for Economic Development of Rural Areas

The project covers the Balkan countries through active cooperation between the National Rural Development Networks and the Balkan Rural Development Network (BRDN). Its aim is to create an enabling environment for civil society and encourage the sustainable development of rural communities.

Main Objective

The main objective of the project was to stimulate an enabling legal and financial environment for civil society, strengthen civil society organisations as effective and accountable actors, and improve their capacity for dialogue with government institutions in order to influence policy-making for the sustainable development of rural communities.

Expected Results

• Promotion of the concepts of sustainable socio-economic rural development, social inclusion and active participation of civil society organisations in policy development and implementation.

• Improved capacities of civil society organisations for advocacy, networking and cooperation with public institutions, increasing their participation in decision-making processes.

• Strengthened management and organisational capacities of civil society organisations and their networks, including the development of long-term strategic plans.

• Improved involvement of civil society organisations and citizens in local governance, as well as promotion of cross-sector partnerships in rural areas.

• Development of the Balkan Rural Development Network as a functional regional cooperation platform.

• Expanded networking, transnational cooperation, knowledge exchange and sharing of good practices among civil society organisations and their networks in the seven partner countries and with countries from the European Union.
