Rural Development Network Marks 15 Years of Dedicated Work

In 2025, the Rural Development Network of Macedonia marked its 15th anniversary, celebrating a decade and a half of work dedicated to rural communities, sustainable development and stronger local cooperation.

The anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on the Network’s journey, its achievements and the partnerships built over the years, but also to look ahead to the future of rural development in the country.

15 Years of Cooperation, Growth and Impact

Since its establishment, the Network has grown into an important platform that connects local organisations, farmers, experts, institutions and civic initiatives. Through continuous cooperation, it has contributed to strengthening the voice of rural communities and promoting sustainable development across the country.

Over the past 15 years, the Network has supported numerous initiatives, projects, research activities, policy processes and platforms for cooperation and knowledge exchange. These efforts have helped create stronger links between rural stakeholders and encouraged more inclusive and participatory approaches to rural development.

Anniversary Event

The jubilee was marked with a special event attended by Network members, long-standing partners, collaborators and supporters. The programme included a presentation of the Network’s history, key milestones and results, as well as a discussion on the future of sustainable food systems and rural livelihoods.

Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Martinovska Stojcheska gave an introductory presentation on the importance of national policies for sustainable food systems and rural livelihoods. The event also featured the Farm to Fork Academy, a programme that promotes a more integrated approach to rural development by linking food production, sustainability, local action and community participation.

Recognition of Inspiring Initiatives

As part of the event, the Farm to Fork Academy Awards were presented to three innovative initiatives that demonstrate the creativity, dedication and potential of rural communities:

Eco Tim Istok Association – for the initiative focused on reducing plastic waste in the Municipality of Kochani through the production of eco tiles from PET plastic.

POLIMAT 13 Association – for “Astragalus Day”, an initiative dedicated to protecting and promoting the rare native plant Astragalus physocalyx.

First Organic Cooperative – Valandovo – for the project “Our Shared Future”, which promotes cooperation, innovation and the development of organic agriculture.

These initiatives show how local ideas can contribute to environmental protection, sustainable agriculture and stronger rural communities.

Looking Ahead

The event ended with an informal gathering, bringing together partners and members in a spirit of gratitude, cooperation and shared commitment.

After 15 years of work, the Rural Development Network continues to look forward with the same dedication. The Network remains committed to supporting rural communities, encouraging partnerships and contributing to a more sustainable future for rural Macedonia.
